Junior School

Aiming High & Looking Beyond

Confidence

Juniors at Whitehall are encouraged to become independent individuals whose problem-solving skills and academic abilities are progressed through a stimulating and extended curriculum.

The use of technology with iPads and laptops available in lessons and the focus on extended Computing skills ensure they are ready to succeed in their future schools and into life.

Every child’s progress is monitored closely with extension or support given early on. This ensures they succeed at their full potential in the Year 6 SATs tests and are fully prepared for entrance into the secondary schools of their choice.

Science & Technology

We have a focus on Science lessons including Design Technology in the Junior classes. In addition to the subjects of Maths and English, Science is considered a core subject and given the appropriate number of lessons within the timetable.

The advanced use of technology through our Computing curriculum enhances the experience of learning for all Juniors.

Art, Music & Creativity

The need for children to express themselves and learn through the use of their imagination and creativity is understood at Whitehall.

Art and Music lessons are given together with Creative Writing sessions in English to foster a love of learning and expression through the written and spoken language.

Sport & Swimming

We offer a wide and varied PE curriculum and opportunities to visit off-site facilities and cross country running in nature.

Our covered, heated swimming pool is in use throughout the summer term with lessons to ensure the children achieve an excellent standard and love for swimming while at school.

Years 3 & 4

We understand that entering the Juniors in Year 3 can be a big step from the Infant department.

Detailed knowledge of each child and their progress is discussed with the Year 3 teacher who is then prepared to begin at each child’s individual level.

Year 4 builds upon and embeds the knowledge gained in the first year of the Juniors.

Years 5 & 6

In Years 5 & 6, the children are taught Maths and English with the same teacher for the entire 2 years of the upper Juniors.

This allows for a smooth progression over the final years of school and ensure that each child is prepared fully for a successful transition into secondary school.

Secondary Transfer

We work closely with children and their parents as consideration is given to their next steps and the transition into Secondary school. We listen and offer advice on possible settings, both in the Maintained and Independent sector and recognise this is an important decision which requires time and discussion.
