Foundation
Our Foundation curriculum is based on the requirements of the Stepping Stones and Early Learning Goals, as laid down by the DES. Considerable attention is given to ensuring that a secure foundation is laid for the future.
The areas of learning are:
- Communication, Language and Literacy
- Mathematical Development
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World
- Creative Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
Many of these goals are reached by way of structured play involving a range of practical indoor and outdoor activities such as sand and water, painting, construction, dressing up and role play. Others may be worked towards within timetabled lessons such as PE, Literacy and Numeracy. Technology, in the form of computers, remote controlled toys and tape recorders, plays an essential part within the Foundation learning environment.
The children’s progress in closely monitored through the use of Baseline assessments, observations and Stepping Stones assessments. Foundation Stage profiles are also made throughout the child’s reception year.
There is close communication between teachers and parents, both on an informal and formal basis. Settling in reports are written early in the academic year and target setting takes place at regular intervals. Three parents’ evenings and an end of year report ensure that parents are regularly informed of their child’s progress.
